Police vehicle runs over protesters in US embassy

On Wednesday, October 19, protesters clashed with the police in front of the US Embassy in Manila as indigenous groups protested against the alleged presence of military and US in their ancestral lands.

During their protest, cops drove a police van through the crowd and few of the protesters were injured.

According to the organizers, around 30 activists were arrested during the violent rally.

SANDUGO, a newly-established alliance of minority groups, led the protest and said that they were about to finish their agenda when policemen dispersed them.

Tear gas was then used by the police and a police vehicle was used to go through their crowd. In return, the activists threw bottles, paint bombs, and rocks towards the police.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms the violent dispersal of the protest here at US Embassy which was led by our fellow Moro and Indigenous Peoples," Jerome Aba, national spokesperson of Suara Bangsamoro, stated.

"This protest serves to highlight the imperialist plunder, abuses, and continued domination of the United States in the country."

"Today, we witnessed how even our local security forces are keen on employing violent tactics to quell the dissent of the marginalized and the oppressed," he added.

The groups that rallied are members of "Lakbayan ng Pambansang Minorya para sa Sariling Pagpapasya at Makatarungang Kapayapaan," a caravan of smaller groups from across the Philippines.
