Giant sperm whale found in Samal beach

, , ,
A dead 37-foot sperm whale was washed ashore in a resort in Babak District, Island Garden City of Samal, Philippines. Beachgoers and residents dropped their jaws upon seeing the gigantic mammal.

It is unfortunate that the sperm whale was dead so professionals decided that the carcass of the animal would be brought to the Bone Museum in Davao City.

The giant marine mammal was found beached on Friday night, December 16 before dying Saturday, Darrell Blatchley, a cetacean expert, told Manila Bulletin.

The whale will be deboned onsite, with the meat of the carcass to be thrown at the Samal Sanitary Landfill, he added.

The cause of the sperm whale's death is still unknown as of now but Blatchley speculated that it may have been choked by eating plastic trash or was injured by the propellers of vessels around the Davao Gulf.
