Japan confirmed the death of a Filipino due to overwork
On Monday, Japan news network Asahi Shimbum reported that a 27-year-old Filipino in Gifu Prefecture died in April 2014 due to "karoshi" or dying due to overwork.
Joey Tocnang came to Japan to work at Gifu Prefecture in 2011. He was employed in a casting company where his work was to cut steel and apply chemicals to a mold.
The Filipino worker passed away due to heart failure just three months before he was scheduled to come home to the Philippines.
The company admitted that Tocnang was forced to work longer hours a month prior to his death, with overtime hours of 78.5 to 122.5.
He was paid the minimum wage and he sent most of his salary to his family in the Philippines.
Japan's labor office advised the family of Tocnang to apply for claims and compensation and it was finally granted this August.
The wife and daughter of the victim was given 3 million yen (approximately P1.4 milllion) in a single payment and about 2 million yen (P900,000) annually for the acquisition of the survivor.
