The Philippine National Police (PNP) said running over the protestants was not part of their plan and defended they were just trying to remove the vehicle away from the area.
In an interview with ABSCBN News, Police Officer 3 Franklin Kho, the one driving the police vehicle, asserted that the protestants were trying to steal it from them.
"Inaagaw na ng mga rallyista yung sasakyan eh, kaya napilitan akong kunin ko yung sasakyan, kaya napaatras ko. 'Yun ang nangyari," he stated.
He explained that if they let the militants to take over the vehicle, then it would be them - the police - who would have ran over and hurt.

"O eh kami naman ang sasagasaan nila kung nakuha nila 'to e," Kho said.
He also said the protesters were trying to turn over the vehicle while he and a colleague were inside.
Kho also clarified the police had no intention of hitting the militants with the vehicle.
"Wala naman kaming intensyon na gawin sa kanila 'yun," he said.
